[After having a close friend return home a few weeks ago, Firo's been largely keeping to himself. He was aware of the danger of losing friends in Luceti, but it always seemed abstract and alien until it actually happened.

It's boredom that finally prompts him to address the network. That and the concern that if he doesn't keep using his skills he'll be near useless when he gets back home. Why not kill two birds with one stone?]

Does anybody here wanna play cards? Any kinda game is fine, or even if you just wanna learn. Most of 'em aren't that hard to pick up and I don't mind teachin' anyone.

[His tone suddenly becomes less light and takes a turn for the grouchier.]

But if you're gonna cheat, save it. I'll know.

[He wasn't put in charge of a Family casino for nothing.]

[Soon after he makes his message, Firo will be rummaging through the item shop for a few packs of cards, carefully going through each one he finds to make sure they're complete. Then he'll linger a little while by the art supplies to pick up some markers.

...No, he is not going to be using them to mark the cards.]

[He didn't really expect that sudden admission, but he can relate; he hasn't been getting out as much as he should since Mac went home. He smiles, deciding he might as well try and help the other guy out.]

Oh, uh... Okay. I'm Firo. Nice to meet'cha, Neku.

Is there anything you'd want me to teach you? Aside from poker there's blackjack and faro that're popular where I come from. I'm not sure about here.

I wouldn't mind learning blackjack, I guess. -- am I gonna need something to gamble with?

[ Nice of him to offer to strangers, though.. ]

We can just skip the bettin', it's not like money or anything's really useful here. Might be better if it's your first time playin', too.

There a place we should meet?

Are you anywhere near the town center? We could meet there.

[...He probably should've specified which one.]

[ -- and Neku doesn't even think to clarify which, which is how he ends up wandering around outside around the fountain, clearly lost. ]

[Luckily, it's that lost look that tells Firo that Neku's probably the person he's looking for. After waiting a moment to see if he seems to have any direction, he strolls over.]

[ His hands are jammed a little uncomfortably in his pockets. ]

[Firo, in contrast, looks completely relaxed. A card game is as close to his element as he'll get in Luceti.]

Yeah, that's me. You ready?

[ Neku can manage Tin Pin Slammer... poorly. But there are no cards involved in that. ]

As long as you don't mind teaching me everything.

I don't mind at all. You said you wanna learn blackjack, right? It's not too hard to get the hang of it.

Yeah. D'you have cards?

Yeah.

[He pulls a deck out of his pocket, then looks around.]

Is there a table around here or somethin'? 'S easier if we got a place to set 'em down.

-- uh. You know, I don't actually come out here a lot. There are tables outside some of the shops, right?

[ His hands are jammed in his pockets. ]

Yeah, there should be...

[He glances around until he sees what Neku's talking about.]

Over there. C'mon.

[Once they reach the tables, Firo plops down and immediately starts shuffling the cards.]

So how long have you been here?

Not long. A couple months, maybe?

[ He keeps his eyes on the cards, though, curious as he takes a seat across from him. ]

.. feels longer.

...Yeah.

[He lowers his eyes to the cards as he continues shuffling; it's been over a year for him and that's one year too many. He taps the deck against the table to keep all the cards in line and tries to perk up his tone.,/small>]

Well, hopefully this'll help you keep yourself occupied if you're here for longer. Ready to start?

[ Assuming they don't know already. He shakes his head, clicking his tongue. ]

Yeah. Just let me know how to play.

Alright. You know what all the cards are worth, right? Two through ten's worth as much as the number on the card. Face cards are ten, and an ace can be one or ten.

[He slides them each a pair of face down cards.]

You wanna get as close to twenty one without goin' over as you can.

[ Neku holds his card close to his face, cutting his eyes up to Firo. ]

How many can I draw at once?

You don't draw. The dealer--that's me--hands 'em to you when you ask for 'em. If we had a group here, we'd go around the table and "hit"--ask for another card--or "stand"--don't ask for any. If you hit and go over 21 you bust you lose your bet.

There are a few other things you can do, but let's keep to the basics for now.

[He glances at his own cards, then looks back at Neku.]

[ Neku blusters for a second- even with the explanation, he's not getting it right away. ]

Hit, please.

Here ya go.

[He hands Neku a card, then gives himself one, almost oblivious to Neku's troubles. It's been so long since he's played that he's getting more caught up in the game than teaching.]

There are certain rules for if the dealer hits or not. If the dealer has sixteen or less, they gotta draw. So that sorta gives you a hint as to what I just had. You're basically playin' to beat the dealer, so try to keep track a' what they might have. Okay?
