[It's early in the morning-after a night of much boredom and little sleep- when Firo opens his journal.]

I've been wonderin': what kinda weapons do people use back where you guys come from? Where I live, people'll fight with anything from fists to tommy guns, but I figure everywhere's gotta have somethin' different.

[Action]

[Later that morning, Firo sets off running for the Battle Dome. He hasn't been too pleased with himself lately: he failed to be effective against the droids that attacked a few weeks ago, and then he couldn't even protect his friend from being mallynapped. Actually, ever since Ennis was kidnapped before his arrival in Luceti he's felt nagging feelings of uselessness. They've only been intensified by recent events.

He has to get stronger. The capos of his Family would be disappointed if they saw him like this. In the back of his mind Firo can practically hear Yaguruma berating him.

He spends most of the day at the Battle Dome, focusing on training until he's ready to drop (though feel free to interrupt him). Maybe trying to go so long without a break isn't a good idea, but that doesn't matter to Firo at this point. When nightfall comes, he wanders outside and slumps by the door, exhausted.

Perhaps, but I think more people have gotten fed up with how many kids are becoming criminals and just want them to stop. By any means necessary.

People will do a lot of stupid things if they think it will make them feel "safe" again.

Would I be wrong if I guess that you deal with "stupid people tryin' to feel safe" a lot?

You could say my entire world's government is based on that very idea.

[He laughs.]

I'd say we got some people like that where I come from. The rest are crooks, mostly.

Maybe it's universal. That's my world in a nutshell.

Maybe it is. Guess there's no real hope for people anywhere.

Tch. If people here can find a way to make basic things work, then there's hope for any world, even if the demographics are completely different.

You think so? I woulda' thought this place was the exception. It is awfully calm here, though. If you take away the experiments, I mean.

[Firo's mostly surprised by the fact that there are so many plain friendly people here.]

[A shrug.] For whatever reason or another, the Malnosso seem inclined toward grabbing people pretty accepting of diversity. Maybe it makes for easier test subjects.

Either way, a lot of them seem headstrong enough to be like this even in their own worlds.

It takes a heckuva lot more than a couple people to make things work. At least where I come from.

[Most politicians promising reform and the like get swallowed by politics and Tammany Hall.]

Eh, whatever. Doesn't really matter while we're stuck here, does it?

Tsk. True enough. So long as we're here, it's completely moot.

That's one of the annoyin' things about this place- we got all the time in the world to think about things but we can't really do anything about 'em.

[Quiet for a bit. He was mallynapped with the express purpose of giving him time to think about what he could do in Luceti with regards to people from home. People he can't do anything about back there.]

You'd be surprised what you can do even a world away.

Yeah? Care to tell me what that means?

I'm not sure it's applicable to anyone else.

There was just something in my world I could never resolve there, but I've had a lot of second chances here. And thirds and fourths... Tch, it's a bit annoying really.

[He chuckles.]

So does that make you lucky or unlucky?

[A shrug that even shows through in his voice.]

Neither. I don't like having my hand forced on this and in my world, leaving it unresolved wouldn't be a big deal. Just something that had to be dealt with while I'm here, one way or another.

Hey, at least you can do somethin', eh? All the stuff I need to clean up has gotta wait until I can get home.

[He doesn't want to outright say it, but he feels pretty useless here.]

You know, I thought that for myself for the first two years here.

Maybe you just haven't found out what you can do here yet that can't be done anywhere else.

Well, maybe but-

[Wait a second. He can't rescue Ennis, but he can, for instance, try and chip away some more at Czes's shell. And then there are things he can do for the friends he's made here.]

[A shrug.] So long as it works out all right.

I don't think I can mess things up too badly here. I hope your stuff works out alright, too. Whatever it is.

Mine can't have a happy ending, but I'll take whatever happens.
