[It's early in the morning-after a night of much boredom and little sleep- when Firo opens his journal.]

I've been wonderin': what kinda weapons do people use back where you guys come from? Where I live, people'll fight with anything from fists to tommy guns, but I figure everywhere's gotta have somethin' different.

[Later that morning, Firo sets off running for the Battle Dome. He hasn't been too pleased with himself lately: he failed to be effective against the droids that attacked a few weeks ago, and then he couldn't even protect his friend from being mallynapped. Actually, ever since Ennis was kidnapped before his arrival in Luceti he's felt nagging feelings of uselessness. They've only been intensified by recent events.

He has to get stronger. The capos of his Family would be disappointed if they saw him like this. In the back of his mind Firo can practically hear Yaguruma berating him.

He spends most of the day at the Battle Dome, focusing on training until he's ready to drop (though feel free to interrupt him). Maybe trying to go so long without a break isn't a good idea, but that doesn't matter to Firo at this point. When nightfall comes, he wanders outside and slumps by the door, exhausted.

[Since hearing about all these people, Firo has never been more grateful for the incompetence of the police back in his city.]

So, have you run into any pirates with stuff like that?

Dozens. There are a few of them in the village no less.

[He can't help but sound excited; he's never met a real pirate before! He clears his throat.]

I mean, um... Are any of 'em ones you've tried to catch before?

Yes.

I've had run-ins with most of them in our world, but it's complicated.

Complicated? Why?

[A pause, then a self-conscious chuckle]

Or does that mean I shouldn't ask?

One captain is my prey, but catching him here is pointless. His crew I don't care about except to get him.

His older brother runs interference, but he was captured by someone else, and Portgas has yet another older brother that I have no intentions of going near. [Because Marco. Just. Marco.] Trafalgar Law is nothing but complicated, and Blackbeard's gone, but he was the one to capture Portgas D. Ace who is the older brother of my prey; Straw-Hat Luffy.

They all have devil fruits, and Blackbeard would have two, but I believe he came from a point before that.

...That does sound pretty complicated.

[He almost wishes he hadn't asked.]

If ya don't mind me askin', how come ya only want the captain and not the crew?

[RICO won't be around for a few years in Firo's time, so the police are limited to mostly going after the low level members of gangs rather than the leaders. He would have guessed that the situation is close enough to the one with the pirates.]

Because he's their uniting force. Without him the others aren't as much threat, and he's the one more likely to be such a danger. He was the one to do the worst of the crimes, and he's the one who wants to be Pirate King.

[The one who was caught by Buggy and smiled at his own death just like Roger, in the very same place in the very same way...]

The others are mostly weaklings anyway or could be dealt with by others. Roronoa Zoro is his swordsman, but my second-in-command wants to deal with him. [Nico Robin still concerns him, but that's a huge headache all on its own with his friend & ex-boss: Aokiji, world government politics, and things Smoker knows he doesn't have all the facts about.]

I guess that makes sense...

Why's your second-in-command want him? They have some sorta history?

She's probably after his swords. Tashigi wants to "liberate" all the named swords from oppressive users.

You'd have to ask her what the fuck that really means.

She sounds like an... interestin' person. I don't suppose she's told you how the hell somebody can be oppressive to a sword? I mean, it's a sword!

I usually try to tune her out.

She says the swords' souls cry for release. Something about them being harmed by being used for evil.

Just... don't ask. Most of my men find it endearing, even if she is a sword ditz.

Then again, my men are pretty much all morons. [He's so nice.]

[There's a trace of irony in his voice; from watching the police back home, Firo doesn't have much faith in the abilities of any sort of law enforcement.]

I keep forgetting how little people here know about things that seem so obvious back home.

G-5 is infamous for having the worst marines, that's why I wanted it. [MASOCHIST.... No, but he had big political reasons for that actually.]

Marines are outnumbered fighting all the pirate of the world, it takes some very strong injustices for a marine to get court-martialed and for the most part the general sentimentality is that a little overkill can be overlooked in the grand scheme of things.

If my men were here they'd probably be setting fires and hitting on every woman in sight. Which is saying something given the pirates we have here. [At least two pyros and 3 pervs...]

So it's all worth it if the 'bad guys' get put away, huh?

[He can't say his Family members wouldn't be setting things on fire, but it still sounds like they have a lot more class than the guys Smoker's talking about.]

Because I'd rather deal with a bunch of men who despise some of the rules, than a bunch of boot-licking toadies who do everything by the book, following the letter of the law, but none of the intentions.

It's a long story for what I think. Let's just say I know better. Real Justice isn't about executing every pirate and anyone associated with pirates. It's about keeping people safe. The rest is a means, but it shouldn't ever be the goal.

[That... actually makes a lot of sense. Even if Firo doesn't believe that it's possible to keep everyone or most people safe.]

...Interestin'. I can't imagine many other people you work with feel that way.

More than people expect. We're just not as loud as those who disagree.

[And his boss who did agree got defeated by one who believed killing pirates was the ultimate goal of justice; and more political stuff about the government who controls the marines preferring absolute justice over "real" justice due to political corruption, so there's that. It is actually quite involved like he said.]
