[It's early in the morning-after a night of much boredom and little sleep- when Firo opens his journal.]

I've been wonderin': what kinda weapons do people use back where you guys come from? Where I live, people'll fight with anything from fists to tommy guns, but I figure everywhere's gotta have somethin' different.

[Later that morning, Firo sets off running for the Battle Dome. He hasn't been too pleased with himself lately: he failed to be effective against the droids that attacked a few weeks ago, and then he couldn't even protect his friend from being mallynapped. Actually, ever since Ennis was kidnapped before his arrival in Luceti he's felt nagging feelings of uselessness. They've only been intensified by recent events.

He has to get stronger. The capos of his Family would be disappointed if they saw him like this. In the back of his mind Firo can practically hear Yaguruma berating him.

He spends most of the day at the Battle Dome, focusing on training until he's ready to drop (though feel free to interrupt him). Maybe trying to go so long without a break isn't a good idea, but that doesn't matter to Firo at this point. When nightfall comes, he wanders outside and slumps by the door, exhausted.

Seems like it's pretty much the only thing to do here. Have you picked up any other weapons since ya got here?

Not really my inclination. Jitte's always worked for me, and when it doesn't I have the hand-to-hand or my devil fruit. And now haki.

The guy who's taught me a lotta what I know says it's better to pick up whatever ya can; never know when it'll come in handy. He's managed to soak up somethin' from almost any style he's seen, I think.

Speakin' a which, what's 'devil fruit'? Is that some sorta fightin' style you guys got back at home?

If it works for him that's great, but it's not really my style. If something happens with the jitte, that's what the hand to hand is for.

A devil fruit is more like a type of superpower. Mine is smoke logia. I can turn into and control smoke.

How..? Wait a second, wouldn't you just blow away if you did that?

You're underestimating how concentrated it can be.

Well... Maybe, but it's still smoke. How concentrated can it get?

I capture pirates with it and I can hold them easily enough. Ever get knocked over by strong winds? Or seen a tornado?

[...Okay, wow, he's going to try and avoid mentioning his criminal activities to this guy. Just in case.]

You can do all that just by bein' smoke? I guess that sounds pretty useful...

[That would be for the best. Though lately Smoker only seems to collect criminal friends.]

It is. I think most devil fruit users secretly think theirs is the best, but they'd be hard-pressed to do better than mine.

[He laughs.]

Oh, yeah? What kind of stuff have they got?

Anything you can imagine, someone somewhere probably has.

Anything? Is this somethin' everybody has where you come from?

No, they're quite rare, but there's a lot of versatility in what someone has or not. My world has billions of people, so even if there are thousands of devil fruits, that's still rare.

Zoans are given an extra animal species: like dogs, cats, koala, leopard whatever, logia are elements like smoke, fire, sand, magma, light, and paramecia is even more "anything." Rubber, earthquakes, iron cuffs, duplicating body parts; things like that.

That is quite a range... Is that "iron cuffs" person another Marine like you?

[The name seems to lend itself pretty well to the occupation. Since what Smoker mentioned about catching pirates, Firo just has to wonder how much of this stuff is used against criminals.]

[Since hearing about all these people, Firo has never been more grateful for the incompetence of the police back in his city.]

So, have you run into any pirates with stuff like that?

Dozens. There are a few of them in the village no less.

[He can't help but sound excited; he's never met a real pirate before! He clears his throat.]

I mean, um... Are any of 'em ones you've tried to catch before?

Yes.

I've had run-ins with most of them in our world, but it's complicated.
